Renting a 4x4 for the desert in Morocco
The gateways to the desert — Merzouga and Zagora — are reached on paved roads from Marrakech or Fes. A 4x4 only becomes essential for tracks and dunes.
Which car
To stay on tarmac up to the guesthouse, an SUV or a comfortable saloon is enough. To drive on tracks (Erg Chebbi, Lake Iriki, remote valleys) you need a real 4x4 with low range — and the agency's explicit sign-off to leave sealed roads.
Tracks and off-road
Many contracts forbid driving off paved roads. Check the listing: on Yevero, vehicles cleared for tracks say so. Driving a forbidden track voids the insurance if something breaks.
Precautions
Fill up in every major town, carry water, share your route, and avoid night driving on southern roads (animals, unlit vehicles). Mobile coverage is fine in villages, non-existent between the dunes.
Park and carry on by camel
Many travellers leave the car at the guesthouse on the edge of the dunes and reach camp on foot or by camel. Guesthouse parking is common and cheap.
