Driving in Morocco: what to know
You drive on the right, the main road network is in good shape and well signed. A few local habits are worth knowing before you set off.
Speed and cameras
40 km/h in town, 100 km/h on open roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Fixed cameras and mobile checks are common, especially at the edges of towns. Fines are paid on the spot in cash against a receipt.
Motorways and tolls
The motorway network links Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Fes and Agadir. Tolls are paid in cash (dirhams) or with a Jawaz tag. Keep change and your entry ticket.
Fuel and stations
Plenty of stations on the main routes, more spread out in the south and the Atlas — fill up before a long leg. Diesel is the most common fuel. Card payment is normal in cities, less certain in rural areas.
Parking and attendants
In town, a parking attendant in a hi-vis vest waves you in and watches the car for a few dirhams (2–20 DH depending on how long). At the medinas, leave the car in a lot outside the walls — the lanes aren't driveable.
